![]() | Harlem River Blues by Justin Townes Earle
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $12.93 For me, this is easily the album of the year. This guy is quite productive and his newest disc could be his best yet. Mr. Earle's style of country/folk has shades of some of the greats, while still maintaining that unique "it" quality of his own. Although his stock is rising, Mr. Earle is vastly under appreciated.
Try: "Ain't Waitin'"

![]() | Teen Dream [CD + DVD] by Beach House
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $4.98 I wasn't a big fan of their earlier albums, but this is a much more accessible listen. From beginning to end, this album is a solid effort that won me over.
Try: "Zebra"
|
![]() | One Life Stand by Hot Chip
Buy new: $9.84 / Used from: $2.84 A new Hot Chip release is always something that I very much look forward toward. This album does not disappoint and provides a similar direction to their recent "Made in the Dark." This album has a bit less of the ballads and lets the tracks flow and develop more than the prior album...if that makes sense. Just give it a listen.
Try: "One Life Stand"
|
![]() | Junky Star by Ryan Bingham
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $6.75 Ryan Bingham's latest comes after his very successful contributions to the Crazy Heart Soundtrack. This disc continues his blend of roots/country music.
|
![]() | Go by Jonsi
Buy new: $10.84 / Used from: $8.00 As an admirer of Sigur Ros' work, I was very much intrigued by Jonsi's solo album. "Go" is mostly upbeat and takes aim at more conventional song structures (seemingly). However, it is Jonsi's overall more organic style that's on display here.
Try: "Sinking Friendships"
|
![]() | Clinging To A Scheme by Radio Dept
Buy new: $10.72 / Used from: $6.79 The newest from The Radio Dept is their most concise effort yet. Only a hair longer than an EP, this album is their most consistent yet. There is nothing new here, so if you are familiar with their dreamy-pop style sound, you won't be disappointed.
Try: "Video Dept"
|
![]() | The Winner
Buy new: $8.99 An excellent album from up-and-coming songwriter Michael Trent, who is also half of the group Shovels and Rope. This is a quality disc of roots/country music that features great songwriting.
Try: "Kitchen - Hallway"
|
![]() | Plastic Beach by Gorillaz
Buy new: $11.67 / Used from: $6.49 This is a great collaborative effort that seems to be a creative step forward for Gorillaz. I wasn't too keen on their prior album, but this album is a solid listen in its entirety and features the best collaborations on any Gorillaz album.
Try: "White Flag"
|
![]() | Sir Lucious Left Foot... The Son of Chico Dusty by Big Boi
Buy new: $13.10 / Used from: $2.03 While all of the buildup surrounding this album, expectations were running very high. While some tracks were a plain miss, for me, this could certainly be the album of the summer.
Try: "Shine Blockas"
|
![]() | All Delighted People EP
Buy new: $7.92 It has been far too long since Mr. Stevens has released some new material. Ever inventive, as far as song structures are concerned, this EP is something different from him.
Try: "All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version)"
|
![]() | The Age of Adz by Sufjan Stevens
Buy new: $13.61 / Used from: $6.47 Sufjan's first full-length in five years is bound to be divisive. First of all, auto-tune is involved here. As will be noted, Sufjan breaks with his past style into a vastly more electronic realm. However, the songs here are still excellent and, I think, will impress if given an open-minded listen.
Try: "Impossible Soul"
|
![]() | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West
Buy new: $9.73 / Used from: $5.38 It is great to listen to Kanye's musical evolution. I wasn't as blown away by this disc as a lot of critics seem to be, but it is a unique addition to his catalog.
Try: "Power"
|
![]() | One-Armed Bandit
Buy new: $8.91 This 9-piece Norwegian collective is back with some new material. If you are not acquainted, I highly suggest that you familiarize yourself with their great style of modern, spacey jazz tunes.
Try: "Bananfluer Overalt"
|
![]() | The Black Dirt Sessions by Deer Tick
Buy new: $11.64 / Used from: $9.95 This latest effort from Deer Tick features a collection of more low-key tracks. For me, this was a bit of a drop-off from the excellent 'Born on Flag Day', but was still a great listen.
|
![]() | Assume Crash Position by Konono No. 1
Buy new: $11.04 / Used from: $22.55 Fifty-six minutes of electrified thumb pianos, jammed-out melodies, and a non-stop party. This a great listen.
Try: "Konono Wa Wa"
|
![]() | The Way Out by The Books
Buy new: $13.64 / Used from: $6.21 It has been far too long since a new album by The Books. This latest fits in very well with their catalogue. I'd say this is more of a departure from their most recent album. The wonderful, atmospheric sound collages are there are as great as ever.
Try: "Free Translator"
|
![]() | Country Music by Willie Nelson
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $3.15 This latest from Willie covers some of the basic country roots and the rest of the album leans heavily in that direction. The guy is living legend and a very active one at that.
Try: "Satisfied Mind"
|
![]() | High Violet by The National
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.77 'High Violet' is not a new direction or style for The National. However, it is a great expansion to the sound that they have established. This is a very consistent listen.
Try: "Bloodbuzz Ohio"
|
![]() | The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Buy new: $9.77 / Used from: $6.23 The latest from Arcade Fire has been hotly anticipated by many. For me, this album was a significant step forward from 'Neon Bible,' which just didn't quite do it for me. Although their are a few lackluster tracks, such as the title track, this is a great listen that delivers the high standard expected from this group.
|
![]() | Never Stop by Bad Plus
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.99 The latest offering from this jazz-trio is their first of completely original tunes. The product here is not a departure from their established sound, but they certainly cement their brand of original, modern jazz.
Try: "My Friend Metatron
|
![]() | Forgiveness Rock Record by Broken Social Scene
Buy new: $13.47 / Used from: $6.98 'Bout time for the latest record from this indie troupe of artists. This one could quite possibly be their best full-length. The songs mesh with one another quite well and create quite the listening experience..
Try: "Sentimental X's"
|
![]() | Sea of Cowards by The Dead Weather
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.73 The newest disc from this super group, of sorts, is a bit of a drop off from their debut, in my opinion. It follows the same sort of gritty rock from their last album and runs with it. Overall, a good listen.
Try: "Gasoline"
|
![]() | Puzzle by Amiina
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $14.97 The latest from this Icelandic group continues a similar atmosphere of previous efforts. On this disc, however, there is a greater focus on percussion which translates well.
|
![]() | Square Shells EP by Kurt Vile
Buy used from: $24.55 Kurt Vile does not rest and although this is an EP, it offers some glimpses of a new direction. This 'lo-fi hiss' appears to be tuned down in favor of a more jam-out and nailed down style. I, for one, enjoyed this disc very much.
|
![]() | Big Echo by Morning Benders
Buy new: $10.06 / Used from: $7.07 This disc caught me a bit off guard. Expect something in the vein of Fleet Foxes or The Shins, but they certainly put their own take on the style. There is nothing ground-breaking on this album, but it is a well affirmed album overall.
Try: "Sleepin In"
|
![]() | She & Him - Volume Two by She & Him
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.62 The second installment from this high profile duo picks up where the prior album ended. This album almost feels like a throw back to relaxed, pining pop of days gone by.
Try: "Thieves"
|
![]() | American VI: Ain't No Grave by Johnny Cash
Buy new: $9.77 / Used from: $5.21 Supposedly the final installment to Johnny Cash's "American" series has finally arrived. This is a very compact disc and not as strong as American V. This one is a no-brainer to give a try and a great listen.
Try: "For the Good Times"
|
![]() | Stuck On Nothing by Free Energy
Buy new: $7.73 / Used from: $0.01 This is a fun, rock record. There is a quality of this that reminds me of The Strokes, but with a Mooney Suzuki tinge.
Try: "Dream City"
|
![]() | Pigeons by Here We Go Magic
Buy new: $14.22 / Used from: $4.00 The latest from this ensemble led by Luke Temple is a somewhat spaced out romp that meanders through the tracks. While I find the Here We Go Magic efforts to be a bit weaker than his solo material, this is a step forward from their debut.
Try: "Pigeons"
|
![]() | Future Weather
Buy new: $7.92 The second release from this group is a drop-off from their prior effort. However, they continue in a similar direction and this EP certainly has its songs. Being that Kurt Vile was in this band, check them out if you are a fan.
|
![]() | This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.75 The newest from the System does not disappoint. This guy just consistently cranks out some infectious dance tunes and this effort is no exception. However, like other LCD albums, this is not a consistent listen. There are some real duds, such as "Drunk Girls," that are sprinkled amongst the good ones.
Try: "Dance Yrself Clean"
|
![]() | Grinderman 2 by Grinderman
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $3.48 The second effort from this Nick Cave-lid band is a bit hit-and-miss, for me.
Try: "Palaces of Montezuma"
|
![]() | Treats by Sleigh Bells
Buy new: $9.92 / Used from: $6.96 As one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year, 'Treats' delivers as promised. This album is loud, energy soaked, condensed, and fun.
Try: "Kids"
|
![]() | Marnie Stern by Marnie Stern
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.00 This a fun, 'spaz'-rock type of record. Marnie Stern's latest is compact and features her great guitar style and the rest of her band matches her quite well.
Try: "The Things You Notice"
|
![]() | Sisterworld by Liars
Buy new: $11.00 / Used from: $2.08 Along the similar vein of their self-titled release, Liars continues with more of the straight-up rock formula..at least as far as Liars is able to do so.
Try: "No Barrier Fun"
|
![]() | Odd Blood by Yeasayer
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.35 This is certainly a step up from their debut album. The sense of 80s revival is much stronger on this disc, which I dig.
Try: "I Remember"
|
![]() | I Am Not a Human Being by Lil Wayne
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.20 This EP seems like a collection of B-sides from before Wayne's prison stint. Although there were some duds for me, it's a great listen that shows Wayne in his pre-'Rebirth' style.
Try: "Bill Gates"
|
![]() | Down There by Avey Tare
Buy new: $10.95 / Used from: $5.47 For me, this Animal Collective offshoot album is best described as mood music. I would say that this is some atmospheric beats music piped underwater.
Try: "Laughing Hieroglyphic"
|
![]() | Dust Lane by Yann Tiersen
Buy new: $13.05 / Used from: $4.73 Yann Tiersen's first studio album in about five years is dreamy take on mortality, from my perspective. This is a great low-key listen in time for Autumn.
Try: "Till the End"
|
![]() | A Chorus of Storytellers by Album Leaf
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.34 Not particularly a new direction from The Album Leaf, but it is certainly more of the enjoyable, ambient sounds produced in past releases.
Try: "Within Dreams"
