Hold on Now YoungsterHold on Now Youngster by Campesinos
Buy new: $15.61 / Used from: $4.74
A mix of pop punk and twee pop and...Architecture in Helsinki...might not sound instantly apealing, but my god, this delivers. The catchiest songs I've ever heard, with great playing and arranging.
Line in the Sand (Dig)Line in the Sand (Dig) by Zox
Buy new: $11.30 / Used from: $3.89
A great indie rock band from Rhode Island. Why has no one ever heard of these guys? Impassioned, personal AND political.
Why There Are MountainsWhy There Are Mountains by Cymbals Eat Guitars
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.50
Sprawling, but concise. Majestic, but down to earth. As for the sound, think of every indie rock band you love, combined. Pixies, Pavement, Built to Spill, Sonic Youth, the Wrens. Of course, great bands are not made simply by combining influences - CEG have a sound completely their own.
My Aim Is True (With Bonus Disc)My Aim Is True (With Bonus Disc) by Elvis Costello
Buy used from: $4.00
What an album! From start to end, this one of the first, but also the best "new wave" record. Every song, I must emphasize, is a gem. Buy this version - the bonuses are a good look at his influences.
Clarity (Expanded Edition)Clarity (Expanded Edition) by Jimmy Eat World
Buy new: $13.71 / Used from: $5.65
One of the only albums classified as "emo" that I like. Beautiful production, and melodic, well written songs.
Bang BangBang Bang by Dispatch
Buy new: $13.78 / Used from: $7.00
Dispatch gets lumped in with frat rock like DMB, but they are far more. A combination of reggae, ska, folk and rock, Dispatch writes some of the catchiest songs ever to come out of Vermont.
Rubber Soul (Remastered)Rubber Soul (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.50
My favorite Beatles record. Not much left to be said about this one.
Bringing It All Back Home (Reis)Bringing It All Back Home (Reis) by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.88
The best Dylan album. And, MAN, is that saying something! Dylan has always has the lyrics, but this album also has the meodies, and beautiful ones at that.
FuneralFuneral by Arcade Fire
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.90
I was a little late discovering this one, but what an album! Brings intensity and bigs statements back to formerly detatched and ironic indie rock.
Keep It Like a SecretKeep It Like a Secret by Built to Spill
Buy new: $10.98 / Used from: $2.99
Some of the best guitar work in indie rock (let's face it, indie is not known for guitar solos) since Dinasaur Jr. With better songs.
Kind of BlueKind of Blue by Miles Davis
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.70
Another record about which everything has been said. I'll simply say it is a classic.
Hospice [Vinyl]Hospice [Vinyl] by The Antlers
Buy new: $18.31 / Used from: $999.99
An intense, intensely personal album. Only some songs actually grab you with the melodies, but all grow on you, and the album is greater than the sum of its parts.
Great 28Great 28 by Chuck Berry
Buy used from: $4.95
This might be the best collection of the first rock 'n' roller. His songs have stood the test of time - impressive considering they will soon be 60 year old.
August & Everything AfterAugust & Everything After by Counting Crows
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
One of the best albums of the '90s (everyone has heard Mr. Jones), Adam Duritz writes some of the most best emotional-without-being-emo songs ever.
The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore EastThe Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East by Allman Brothers Band
Buy used from: $2.88
Possibly the best live album ever. The best way to give an impression of this album is this: they have a song that hovers around 30 minutes, and it never drags.
Guitar RomanticGuitar Romantic by Exploding Hearts
Buy new: $16.63 / Used from: $7.41
The only album that has ever captured the spirit of punk since 1977 (not that there hasn't been great punky bands), the Hearts see '77 punk, then raise the standard.
All of a Sudden I Miss EveryoneAll of a Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions in the Sky
Buy new: $12.32 / Used from: $4.24
Post rock has long had the reputation of being boring and inaccessible. The solution: listen to Explosions in the Sky. Most bands with vocals never aproach this level of emotion.
Rocket to Russia (Dlx)Rocket to Russia (Dlx) by Ramones
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.80
The Ramones were the start of punk. When most think of punk, they think of the rage of the Sex Pistols, or the mall punk of Blink-182. The founders themselves simply made an amped up version of the Beach Boys mixed with the MC5.
Broken BellsBroken Bells by Broken Bells
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.09
Greater than the sum of its parts (Danger Mouse and James Mercer), this record is an homage to sixties pop with a very modern feel.
The '59 SoundThe '59 Sound
Buy new: $12.00 / Used from: $6.98
It's amazing no one though of it before - Springsteen + Punk. The Clash with a dose of the Buzzcocks or Green Day. Passionate, anthemic (obviously) music.
Europe 72Europe 72 by Grateful Dead
Buy new: $17.17 / Used from: $13.99
All detractors of the Grateful Dead's musicianship, buy this album. And then shut up.
SmokeSmoke
Buy new: $12.26
Boy, does power pop sound like a terrible idea. And - let's face it - it usually is. Not in this case. There's enough punk here to offset the poppy stuff and vice versa. Highly reccomended
Fortress Round My HeartFortress Round My Heart by Ida Maria
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.89
Ida Maria has given us a great poppy punkish record. Her voice is what seals the deal for me. It's like Janis Joplin singing Buzzcocks songs.
PinkertonPinkerton by Weezer
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.94
The Blue Album's older brother. The catchiness of Blue with angsty (but funny) lyrics, and a rawer sound.
Complete DiscographyComplete Discography by Minor Threat
Buy used from: $6.20
The best hardcore punk band. Though initially their songs seem to be devoid of melody, for a band whos vocals are all shouted, Minor Threat's songs are very catchy.
