Merriweather Post PavilionMerriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $7.44
Who'd have thought my #1 pick this year would be a trippy swirl of techno-pop and Beach-Boys-esque harmonies? But there it is - "Panda Bear" and friends have finally broken through with the most enjoyable pop album of the year.
It's FrighteningIt's Frightening by White Rabbits
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.99
Britt Daniel of Spoon produced this sophomore set, and it shows - in a good way. From the opening dual-tribal-drum beat of "Percussion Gun" (best song of the year, by the way), they had me hooked.
Wolfgang Amadeus PhoenixWolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $6.50
French band's breakthrough album - another set of luscious electronic pop, led off by the one-two punch of "Listztomania" and "1901".
The Hazards of LoveThe Hazards of Love by The Decemberists
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.65
Maybe not the classic that their previous album, The Crane Wife was, but still a very strong concept album with guest vocalists, and "The Rake's Song", one of the most morbid but rockingest songs of the year.
Blue Lights on the RunwayBlue Lights on the Runway by Bell X1
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.05
With this second US release, this popular Irish band may finally be getting the recognition they deserve in the States. One of the best of the "post-Coldplay" bands - the David-Byrne-ish "The Great Defector" is a highlight.
Around the WellAround the Well by Iron & Wine
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $13.83
Sam Beam and company's 2-disc set of rare and previously unreleased tracks isn't merely a fan's-only album; it stands up with any of his best work.
Dark Was the Night [Vinyl]Dark Was the Night [Vinyl] by Various Artists
Buy new: $28.48
From the "Red Hot" series, which for 20 years has donated proceeds to AIDS research, comes a 2-disc set with new and unreleased gems from a who's-who of the alternative scene: Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, etc.
MannersManners by Passion Pit
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.90
I really seem to have fallen hard this year for electronic pop, and these guys are about as processed as it gets. But man, they write some good tunes. "Sleepyhead" should have annoyed the heck out of me with its Chipmunk-like vocals, but I can forgive them that because it's such a damn good song.
Middle CycloneMiddle Cyclone by Neko Case
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.24
Maybe not as thrilling as some of her previous work, but she's still the reigning queen of alt-country - a solid album of fine tunes including "People Got a Lot of Nerve".
Strict JoyStrict Joy by The Swell Season
Buy new: $12.85 / Used from: $11.45
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova prove that "Once" was no fluke. A more polished, consistent and mature work than that soundtrack was - very satisfying.
The Open Door EPThe Open Door EP by Death Cab For Cutie
Buy new: $4.98 / Used from: $1.99
The band's followup to "Narrow Stairs" is an EP of tracks that didn't make it onto that album, not due to their quality but the fact that they were mostly too "upbeat" for that album. We're glad to have them - "Little Bribes" is one of their best songs ever.
Treasury Library CanadaTreasury Library Canada by Woodpigeon
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.00
Folky band out of Canada that still has virtually no recognition here - not for lack of talent. Beautifully tight harmonies and arrangements - fans of Sufjan Stevens and Fleet Foxes will enjoy them. Highlight track: "I Live a Lot of Places"
Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!Tell 'Em What Your Name Is! by Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.95
The funkiest record I've heard in many a year - Lewis sounds like he's channeling James Brown. Highlights: "Sugarfoot" and "I'm Broke".
Oh Tall Tree in the Ear (Dig)Oh Tall Tree in the Ear (Dig) by Roman Candle
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $4.78
North Carolina's brother band of Skip and Logan Matheny create some sweet and catchy alt-country rock, yet their vocals and emotivenees remind me of the defunct band The Format. Highlights: "Eden Was a Garden", "Why Modern Radio is A-OK".
Popular SongsPopular Songs by Yo La Tengo
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $5.94
NJ's lo-fi masters create another winner - this one deconstructs from shorter, accessible pop songs as advertised, to extended-jam dreamscapes and a churning, noisy rock-guitar riff. And it works.
Wait For MeWait For Me by Moby
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $7.99
The electronica pioneer gives us his most satisfying album in years - more of the cinematic than the rocking side of Moby, but still consistently good.
March of The Zapotec and Realpeople HollandMarch of The Zapotec and Realpeople Holland by Beirut
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.39
Is it Balkan folk ("Gypsy" music)? Mexican field recordings? Synth-pop? All of the above? This latest from the prodigious Zach Condon is a captivating mish-mash of world musics and studio production. He has already created an impressive body of work.
My One & Only ThrillMy One & Only Thrill by Melody Gardot
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.88
Philly chanteuse's second full-length release sounds even more mature and assured than the first. She's working Norah Jones' side of the block, and doing quite well, thank you. Highlight: "Who Will Comfort Me?"
Love at the End of the World (Dig)Love at the End of the World (Dig) by Sam Roberts
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $1.92
Undersung Canadian rocker's third US release contains more of the hook-filled, guitar-driven, lyrically strong tunes that fans have come to expect. Highlights: The title track and "Detroit '67".
American Central DustAmerican Central Dust by Son Volt
Buy new: $13.85 / Used from: $8.60
Jay Farrar and his band have stripped down production this time for a set of starker, quieter, but no less moving songs. Highlight: "Down to the Wire".
Roadhouse SunRoadhouse Sun by Ryan Bingham & Dead Horses
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.24
Bingham impressed us in his debut as an alt-country singer-songwriter to be reckoned with. He still is, but this is easily a more rocking set, enough to give Southern rock standard bearers The Drive-by Truckers a run for their money. Highlight: "Bluebird".
