![]() | Grieg: Peer Gynt
Buy new: $12.75 / Used from: $6.55 A stunning recording of beautiful music. All the music is great, but Tracks 13/14 - Peer Gynts Serenande/Solveigs Song - are particularly wonderfully well performed. The lyrics are magical and are well worth reading in the booklet as the singing starts later on.

![]() | Brahms: Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2, Opp. 8, 87
Buy new: $12.71 / Used from: $6.24 No surprise to read that this specific recording moves some people to tears. Apparently Brahms spent more than 35 years writing and revising the score. The first time you hear it you won't be disappointed. It really does sound like a masterpiece on first hearing. What an achievement.

![]() | A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981) by Johann Sebastian Bach
Buy new: $16.23 / Used from: $10.99 If you've listened to quite a lot of Bach, but not this solo piano work, you are really missing out on something extra-special: Gould's performance, and the compositions. Having said that, you could probably buy any well-rated version of Bach's Goldberg Variations and/or Well-Tempered Clavier, and be very happy.

![]() | Sibelius: Violin Concerto,Op.47 / Serenades Nos. 1 & 2 / Humoresque
Buy new: $13.09 / Used from: $2.74 Another stunning piece of music, but not a perfect performance. Mutter (looking gorgeous on the cover) sounds self-conscious. Previn's orchestra is not always supportive; furtive in the presence of Anne-Sophie? It occasionally sounds slow, as if the engineer slowed the tape. But this adds to the feeling that something/one who isn't the most perfect can actually be the most engaging.

![]() | Martha Argerich Plays Chopin: The Legendary 1965 Recording by Martha Argerich
Buy new: $11.91 / Used from: $7.16 As it says, a legendary recording coupling the great Chopin with Martha Agerich. Read the adoring reviews here on Amazon...you'll have to buy it. Alternatively, like Bach/Gould, you could go for other versions. For example, I got Vasary's set of Chopin for a great price. Its not extra-famous, but its highly rated by those who have heard it, and its very, very good.

![]() | Mozart: Piano Trios K.496 & 502 [Germany]
Buy used from: $7.12 Elegant and romantic music, played (if you like Mozart played like this) with an extremely light touch. Shame its so expensive to buy at the time of writing.
|
![]() | Schubert: Impromptus For Piano
Buy new: $10.72 / Used from: $4.88 From the first extended note, a classic. I'm not always 100% enamored by Murray Perahia's interpretations of some other composers, but his playing here has a strong, yet sensuous flow.
|
![]() | Schubert: The Late String Quartets
Buy new: $20.09 / Used from: $14.47 Someone else has said it but its worth repeating. This exceptional and romantic chamber music, composed under the most difficult of personal circumstances, is "surprisingly unknown". It includes the wonderful Death and the Maiden, but all 3 CDs are very fine. Watch the price: it goes up and down, so buy on a down-swing!
|
![]() | Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 20, 23, 24, 26 & 27
Buy new: $19.37 / Used from: $7.95 A CD that showcases Mozart's lyrical powers, quiet, tender and at times extravagent, at his very best. While Curzon looks like a corporate executive or head of accounting on the cover, his interpretation is really very subtle, tender, romantic and enjoyable. I'd also highly recommend Curzon playing Brahms.
|
![]() | Grieg, Schumann: Piano Concertos / Radu Lupu, André Previn
Buy new: $9.04 / Used from: $3.36 A wonderful combination of piano concertos, played exceptionally well. Again, music that sounds instantly familiar. The last movement of Grieg has some quieter piano passages that are so beautiful you may want to stop and replay them again and again.
|
![]() | Liszt: The Two Piano Concertos; The Piano Sonata
Buy new: $9.85 / Used from: $4.91 A wow-factor recording. Richter, the virtuoso, controls his virtuosity and delivers. I love reading people who know a lot more about Liszt than I do debating who recorded the definitive version of this music. Talk about real PASSION. Same goes for the Hungarian Rhapsodies.
|
![]() | Haydn: Piano Sonatas Nos. 33, 38, 58, 60
Buy new: $12.18 / Used from: $4.53 Probably some of the most joyful, refined keyboard music ever written. Ax is a good choice for these sonatas.
|
![]() | Itzhak Perlman & Daniel Barenboim - Beethoven: Violin Concerto, Romances 1 & 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy used from: $6.32 Brilliant music and a marvellous live recording. You can also enjoy seeing Perlman's chubby fingers (no offence, just an observation) play it on DVD....take a look on youtube clips before purchasing. Is Perlman the best ever at this piece? Who knows how others played.......
|
![]() | Stardust by Stephane Grappelli
Buy used from: $13.08 (Pause for thought). ANYONE who says recorded-era performances must be the best ever should listen to this. Yehudi Menuhin was amazed at Grappelli's virtuosity. Nigel Kennedy loved his playing and tone. If Grappelli could be so good, so could unrecorded violinists 100 or 200 years ago. This CD has piano-violin conversations that match any sonata, Brahms et al..(Back to list)

![]() | Handel - Messiah / Ameling · A. Reynolds · Langridge · Howell · Marriner by George Frideric Handel
Buy new: $15.26 / Used from: $6.79 Some of the grand operas cover pretty adventurous subjects, but nothing could top this subject, and Handel does a masterful job. A classic that is good to listen to all year round. I feel it's under-valued when classified as "Christmas music".
|
![]() | Trios by Faure & Debussy
Buy new: $13.81 / Used from: $5.40 This is very enjoyable music. I particulaly like the Debussy and Faure, but you may prefer the Ravel, and that's part of the fun of having three composers on one CD. All in all you'll be guaranteed a great purchase.
|
![]() | Monteverdi: Ottavo Libro de' Madrigali, Vol.1 by Claudio Monteverdi
Buy used from: $5.96 A most impressive recording of some of the most beautiful music of all time (Montiverdi's Madrigals, Book 8). Amongst all the gems, track 3 'Lamento della ninfa' really is "astounding" (to quote the Amazon reviewer), for its beauty and technical performance. Italians singing Italian masterpieces. Not a pre-requisite for success, but this version surpasses all others.
|
![]() | Bizet: Carmen
Buy new: $38.87 / Used from: $15.28 A justly top-rated performance, although a little pricy right now - I listened to a library copy first. There are single CD highlights versions of this famous opera, but the full length is a joy. Some of the music is so well known, almost formulaic (if that's a word)...its fun to skip to less familiar pieces.
|
![]() | Mad About Tchaikovsky
Buy used from: $0.50 Tchaikovsky lends himself quite well to "greatest hits" compilations and romantic ballet clips. Although I own other Tchaikovsky CDs this is a good one, ending as it does, with a bang. (The full 1812).
