The SuburbsThe Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Buy new: $9.69 / Used from: $6.23
Gorgeously expanding on their already raw and communal sound, the Arcade Fire trade in the macabre, baroque pop aesthetic for more rock-centric Americana. Stand outs include The Suburbs, Suburban War, Month of May, and Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).
Crystal CastlesCrystal Castles by Crystal Castles
Buy new: $9.58 / Used from: $5.75
Crystal Castles second self-titled album provides the same variety, but more consistency than their previous effort. It covers the spectrum of intensity with aplomb, from riot-starters Doe Deer and Birds to hypnotic intrancers Celestica and Violent Dreams.
This Is HappeningThis Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.75
While the Sound of Silver embraced friendships and optimism, this album shows the ugly side of said friendships with a healthy dose of realistic paranoia. Dance Yrself Clean and Home are the perfect bookends to a fantastic record.
Teen Dream [CD + DVD]Teen Dream [CD + DVD] by Beach House
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $4.98
Beach House knock it out of the park with their third album. Because of greatly enhanced production values, their sound washes over you with its lush and ethereal expansiveness. Silver Soul might be the best song I've heard all year.
GoGo by Jonsi
Buy new: $10.84 / Used from: $8.00
Breaking away from the ethereal post-rock of Sigur Ros, Jonsi lets loose on a pleasantly joyous record. Combining his signature voice with more traditional arrangements and sounds, its the most accessible and well-rounded he's become. A brief moment of gloom on the album, Tornado, happens to be the stand-out track.
SwimSwim by Caribou
Buy new: $11.08 / Used from: $6.99
Trance-inducing meditations and funky barn burners, Caribou creates quite a distinctive record that is both simple and complex. Whenever I hear Odessa, I feel the immediate urge to dance.
TreatsTreats by Sleigh Bells
Buy new: $9.92 / Used from: $6.96
Nothing quite knocks you for a loop the first time you hear the opening track Tell 'Em, and it doesn't slow down from there. Other highlights include Kids, Infinity Guitars, and Crown on the Ground.
HiddenHidden by These New Puritans
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.35
This concept album seems to have been inspired by 300, because when I listen to it, all I can think of is slow-motion battle scenes, ancient architecture, and impending darkness on a grand scale. Brownie points for sounding like nothing else I've heard before.
